Healthy Ramadan With Tabibi
Healthy Ramadan With Tabibi

Ramadan is a month-long period of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide. During this time, individuals abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset. Fasting during Ramadan is seen as a spiritual and mental purification process, but it can also have significant health benefits if done correctly.

In this article, we will explore healthy fasting in Ramadan and discuss the essential laboratory tests and nutritional considerations needed to achieve health promotion.

Nutrition and Fasting in Ramadan

Fasting during Ramadan can be a challenge, especially for individuals who may have underlying health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or gastrointestinal disorders. Therefore, it is essential to maintain a balanced and healthy diet during non-fasting hours to promote good health.

Suhoor and Iftar are the two essential meals during Ramadan. Suhoor is a pre-dawn meal that should be taken just before the Fajr prayer. It is essential to have a nutritious meal at Suhoor that includes complex carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. Complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, oats, and fruits provide energy that is released slowly throughout the day. Protein-rich foods such as eggs, cheese, and yogurt provide essential amino acids that help maintain muscle mass and repair body tissues. Fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains help maintain gut health and prevent constipation.

Iftar is the meal taken after sunset when the fast is broken. It is essential to hydrate the body and replenish the nutrients lost during the day's fast. Therefore, it is recommended to break the fast with dates, which provide an instant source of energy and are rich in essential minerals such as potassium and magnesium. It is also important to consume a balanced meal that includes a variety of foods such as lean protein, whole grains, and vegetables.

Essential Laboratory Tests

Fasting during Ramadan can affect the body's metabolism and may have an impact on certain laboratory tests. Therefore, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional to determine which laboratory tests are necessary and when they should be performed.

The following are some essential laboratory tests that should be considered during Ramadan:

1.    Blood Glucose Monitoring: Individuals with diabetes should monitor their blood glucose levels regularly during Ramadan to avoid any complications.

2.    Lipid Profile: Fasting during Ramadan can affect the body's lipid profile. Therefore, it is essential to check the cholesterol and triglyceride levels to monitor the risk of heart disease.

3.    Electrolyte Balance: Dehydration during fasting can cause an imbalance in electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium. It is essential to monitor the electrolyte balance to avoid any complications.

4.    Renal Function Tests: Fasting during Ramadan can affect the kidneys' function, and therefore it is essential to monitor renal function through tests such as serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Health Promotion

Healthy fasting during Ramadan can have significant health benefits such as weight loss, improved lipid profile, and blood glucose control. However, it is essential to follow a balanced and nutritious diet during non-fasting hours and to consult a healthcare professional to determine which laboratory tests are necessary.

In conclusion, fasting during Ramadan can be a healthy and beneficial practice if done correctly. A balanced and nutritious diet during non-fasting hours and essential laboratory tests can help achieve health promotion and prevent any complications that may arise from fasting.

Today my son had an accident resulting in a large deep cut on the back of his head. Dr Radwa came round and was absolutely amazing from start to finish. She phoned the local hospital to arrange the stitches, took us there with her driver, arranged everything and stayed with us whilst my semi hysterical 2.5 year old received a numbing injection and 3 stitches. She absolutely went above and beyond. My son is still asking about the doctor!

Outstanding service. Thank you ~ Jen
